YMCA beach opens Saturday

WATER SLIDE AT THE YMCA IN CORNELIUS

June 18. By Emily Paton. WalletHub ranks Cornelius the fifth-best lake beach town in the US, but where are the beaches? Well, Mecklenburg County officials have closed Ramsey Creek Beach due to COVID-19 precautions, including a shortage of lifeguards and the relatively small size of the beach, which makes social distancing problematic.

Otherwise, beaches are mostly behind private homes in Cornelius. Jetton Park beaches, while great for sunbathing, are not open for swimming.

But the beach at the Lake Norman YMCA opens to members Saturday, June 20 from 11 am to 4 pm. The facility has been freshened with $2 million in renovations, including a Nautilus water inflatable, multiple climbing walls and three water slides. The YKids area, Downstairs Fitness Room, Functional Training Room and the Barre/Yoga Studio and Cycle studios have been renovated as well.

The inside of the facility is not open yet. Like other gyms, the Y will not open until Gov. Cooper allows gyms to reopen.

Lifeguards will be on duty, but the beach is only open on Saturdays. Membership runs from $73 to $167 for families. Due to COVID-19, only members can currently be admitted, no guests allowed.
