Nov. 14. By Dave Vieser. [Analysis.] Most voters in Cornelius, as well as Davidson and Huntersville, are aware that, in the midst of a strong Republican vote this year, a Democrat, Beth Helfrich, won the NC House 98 race vs. Republican Melinda Bales.
What they may not know is, as a result, the GOP will lose its veto-proof supermajority in January.
What it means
Therefore, state representatives will be meeting on Nov. 19 in Raleigh and are expected to address House Bill 10 which had been previously vetoed by Gov. Roy Cooper.
If overridden, it would provide funds for a private school voucher program in the state, and require sheriffs in the state to cooperate with federal immigration officials.
Once Helfrich takes office in January, the only way the GOP can override a veto from new governor Josh Stein is to convince some Dems to support their positions—a long shot in most instances.
So does that mean that Helfrich is opposed to (i) parents having a choice as to which schools their children attend and (ii) requiring sheriffs to cooperate with the federal govenrment in redressing the illegal immigration crisis?
Thank you Beth and all who voted for her and your courage and honesty to help NC out in this unusual time in history.
