Westmoreland Road closing Oct. 13 for signal light installation

This is one of many crosswalk improvements that Cornelius is making to ensure safer streets. The improvements are made in concert with the town’s Heads Up Cornelius safety campaign that  engages residents in order to disseminate safety guidance and inform pedestrians, cyclists and motorists of local and state laws. | Town of  Cornelius

Oct. 6. Westmoreland Road will be closed between Hwy. 21 and West Catawba Avenue on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 8 pm to 2 am as J.D. Goodrum installs a mid-block crosswalk with  signal lights.

The new crosswalk will serve as a connection between Phase I and Phase II of McDowell Creek Greenway. Once constructed, the existing crosswalk at Lake Pines Drive will be removed.

HAWK (High-intensity Activated crossWalK) signals are activated by pedestrians when they need to cross. The signal safely slows and then stops traffic, giving pedestrians an unobstructed opportunity to cross the street before vehicle traffic resumes.

This is the first of potentially three evenings that the road will be closed for signal installation. Local traffic will have unrestricted access to the Westmoreland Athletic Complex and nearby neighborhoods and businesses.

Shown is  an example of a HAWK signal mounted on a single mast arm, similar to the one that will be installed on Westmoreland Road, as well as the location of the new crosswalk. | Town of  Cornelius
