Weekender March 24-26: Ballet, car show, Men that Cook

The Charlotte Ballet will perform at the Cain Center for the Arts on Saturday, March 25.

Here’s how events are lining up this weekend:

Friday, March 24

Davidson College Chorale and Chamber Singers: Considering Matthew Shepard

7:30 – 9 pm | March 24. Twenty-five years have passed since Matthew Shepard, a young, gay student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, beaten and left to die in a field. Five days later, when Matt died, the world reacted, passing hate crime legislation at the state and federal level. The singers will sing Matthew’s story by performing Craig Hella Johnson’s oratorio, Considering Matthew Shepard. Passages from Matt’s personal journal, interviews and writings from his parents Judy and Dennis Shepard and newspaper reports, convey that light prevails over darkness and love over hate. This concert is free and open to the public; no tickets are required, Davidson College Presbyterian Church Sanctuary.

Grand opening

10 am- 1 pm | March 25. All are invited see the new Davidson Town Hall & Community Center, South Street.

Charlotte Ballet

Doors 12:30 pm, show 2 pm | March 25. Under the Lights, set to the music of the iconic Johnny Cash. Under the Lights is a tribute to the life and legacy of “The Man in Black” and his beloved June Carter Cash.  $40-$70. Cain Center For The Arts.

Community Service Day

9 am – noon | March 25. Learn about invasive vs. native species, and help remove invasive species from the historic site grounds. Please bring work gloves, hand spades, and pruners. RSVPs are required. Pizza and drinks for volunteers at noon. Hugh Torance House and Store, 8231 Gilead Rd., Huntersville.

Sunday, March 26

Men That Cook

11 am – 2 pm | March 26. 18 teams of men serving their favorite foods to raise money for their favorite charities. Organized by the Huntersville Happy Hour Rotary. $20. Sweet Magnolia Estate, 10101 Bailey Rd., Cornelius.

Keukenhoff Spring Market 

11 am – 4 pm | March 26. Spring market with artisans and makers, musicians and food trucks This market after Keukenhof, Holland, home to one of the largest tulip gardens where spring is their festival season. Lost Worlds Brewing, 19700-D One Norman Blvd., Cornelius.

STEAMfest 2023

Noon – 7 pm | March 26. STEAMfest provides youth of all ages with free opportunities to Imagine, Discover and Explore topics in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics through fun and engaging hands-on activities. Woodlawn School campus, 135 Woodlawn School Loop, Mooresville 28115.

Cars, Carbs, & Coffee Car/Truck Show

Rescheduled: 1-3 pm | March 26. Cars that are registered will arrive and park at the Discovery Place parking deck. Music from Tim Cook band. Free coffee; food available from vendors. 105 Gilead Rd., Huntersville.

House and Store Guided Tour

1:15 and 3 pm | Sundays. Step back in time to 1779 and explore the Hugh Torance House and Store. There is no fee, but donations are welcome. Cedar Grove and the Hugh Torance House and Store, 8231 Gilead Rd., Huntersville.

A work by Jacolby Satterwhite titled We Are In Hell. the artist has an exhibite in Davidson Jan. 17-March 26.

Artist exhibit

10 am – 5 pm Monday-Friday; noon -4pm weekends | Jan. 17-March 26. Jacolby Satterwhite’s Finding Home Again exhibit focuses on his digital animated series, Birds in Paradise, which features a mythological, queer universe inspired by pop culture, African folklore, ritual, video games and personal narratives. For the American artist, liberation, rebirth, and healing of the black, queer body is achieved through movement and sound. Van Every/Smith Galleries,  Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center, Davidson College.

Home Grown exhibit

9 am – 5 pm Monday-Friday; 9 am -noon, Saturday. | Jan 30-March 31. A non-juried exhibit that showcases the talent of local artists. Cornelius Arts Center gallery, 19725 Oak St.
