March 6. Students and staff at J.V. Washam Elementary School celebrated Violet Washam Day today. The late Violet Washam modeled out community support, active volunteerism and compassion in Cornelius. Her husband, John Washam is the son of J.V. Washam, for whom the school was named. Mrs. Washam always made herself available when a volunteer was needed. In addition to naming the school’s library the Violet Washam Learning & Media Center, staff and students continue to honor her by wearing purple every year on March 6, her birthday.
