Variances approved for Home Depot, Total Wine

Home Depot in Cornelius

Dec. 12. By Dave Vieser. At their Monday Dec. 12 meeting, the Cornelius Board of Adjustment unanimously approved a variance which will permit Home Depot to add a tool rental operation. The addition will be on the east side of the building, close to Hwy. 21/Statesville Road.

Background

The US equipment rental market is growing.

Research & Markets forecasts a 5.47 percent compound annual growth rate for the equipment rental sector from now through 2026 thanks to a rise in “party & event planning, growth in oil & gas production and rapid urbanization.”

The Home Depot here is located 23.5 feet from the public right of way and 95 feet from Statesville Road. With the variance approved addition, site plans submitted by the firm show the new building to be three feet from the public right of way.

Home Depot’s John Chescavage, senior corporate counsel – real estate and store operations, said that the new building will still be approximately 45 feet from the edge of Statesville Road. Plans exist for the NCDOT to widen Statesville Road in the future but a precise time frame is not known at this time.

Total Wine

At the same meeting, the Board approved a variance which will permit a wall sign for a new Total Wine store located on Torrence Chapel. They will be located in the northern section of the former Stein Mart store. While still larger than town regulations, the new plan is smaller than the previous proposal.

Correction: In the headline on this story in yesterday’s newsletter, the street was incorrect.
