Feb. 21. US Rep. Tim Moore officially opened his office for staff in Cornelius yesterday as a group of about 100 protestors gathered peacefully in the cold in front of Town Hall.

Moore, the former speaker of the NC House of Representatives, cut the ceremonial ribbon, saying that the office would assist people whether they voted for him or note.

The protest outside focused on the gerrymandered district that goes from Cornelius and Davidson to Polk County and Burke County. “It cuts us off from the rest of Mecklenburg County and other contiguous counties near North  Mecklenburg,” an organizer said.

The protesters, many of them Democrats, said Moore’s new district was gerrymandered specifically for him to win.

Among other things, protesters chanted “Show me what Democracy looks like, this is what Democracy looks like” and held signs including “No Moore voter suppression.”

  3. Appreciate these voters’ peaceful efforts to remind us that NC legislators are choosing their voters, rather than the voters choosing their legislators. I hope Mr. Moore will hear these protestors’ concerns and push the NCGA to appoint a nonpartisan districting commission, as so many states have done, to work on fair election maps. I’m sure such a move will help him win re-election in a non-gerrymandered district.

  4. Wow!! That’s a lot of people, especially given how cold it was – there was hardly 15 people there for Tim.

  5. The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely. It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government. (Last sentence pertains)
