April 1. Rather than preserve tracts of woodlands, a new tree preservation ordinance will set aside infill parcels for Bonsai trees that can be moved as needed for recreation and future development.
As development occurs the trees can be placed in new locations in the same pots on artificial turf for additional recreation options.
Quotable
“These woodlands may be smaller, but at the end of the day, it’s a win-win for everyone, if you will,” said the planning aide behind the new canopy preservation ordinance. “Admirably, it only allows trees to be cut down only when necessary, if possible.”
Background
The tree ordinance has helped to encourage new development on West Catawba and Westmoreland where some “green fields” remain.
The ordinance is like one in Davidson, only different.
