Town Board approves two Smithville revitalization measures

Sept. 5. By Dave Vieser. At their Sept. 3 meeting, the Cornelius Town Board unanimously approved two measures in support of the Smithville revitilization plan, including a $226,000 contract with an appraiser for 63 parcels which the town will acquire for the multifaceted infrastructure program.

However, before the town board action, it was necessary to quell a false rumor that the board would be voting on whether the Smithville Community Coalition (SCC) would remain the designee for some $500,000 in state and county funds.

‘Totally untrue’

“That suggestion is totally untrue,” said Deputy Town Manager Wayne Herron. “Your board has every intention of continuing the arrangements previously made with SCC and tonight’s action will simply extend the life of the agreement to 2029.”

Here is specifically what the commissioners approved on Tuesday evening:

1. Extended the $500,000 sub-recipient agreement with Mecklenburg County for the project to June 2029.

2. Approved a contract with Gulf Coast LLC of Belmont to appraise 63 parcels which the town will need to acquire to begin infrastructure improvements in Smithville.

What’s planned includes curb and gutter improvements as well as a widening of Nannie Pott Lane.

Public Works Director Tyler Beardsley estimates that the pricing procedure will take approximately one year to complete.
