Tommy’s Appliance Advice: Refrigerator maintenance

Sept. 3. Cornelius resident Tommy Walker had more than 50 years experience in appliance repair and operated Tommy’s Appliance Service until retiring a few years ago.  Tommy offers his advice for various appliances.

Refrigerator door gaskets do not tear on their own. Fruit juices, soft drinks, etc. spill and splatter on the gasket that causes it to stick to the surface it’s supposed to seal off.

As you open the door, you’re tearing the gasket over time. Manufacturers are making gaskets less and less available.

Just simply wash the gasket and the surface it touches with soap and water.

Also, vacuum the coils twice a year, or more frequently if you have pets.

Some coils are in the front behind the grill so you have to take the back off.  If you do have to take the back off,  unplug the refrigerator first.

Have a good month.

Tommy.
