The roads ahead: Better later than never

HERRON

Feb. 17. By Dave Vieser. There’s some good news coming from the NCDOT pertaining to road improvements in Cornelius: Several of the smaller projects which had been on hold have been reactivated. However, the widening of West Catawba Avenue from Jetton to Sam Furr is still a long way off.

“We are happy that NCDOT has reactivated six of our projects.” said Deputy Town Manager Wayne Herron. Many of the reactivated projects would be under construction beginning next year under the DOT schedule:

Torrence Chapel Road Improvements
2021 right-of-way completion and utility relocation
2022-2023 construction

Dual Roundabouts at 21/Catawba
2021 right-of-way completion and utility relocation
2022 construction

Potts/NC 115 Roundabout
2021-2022 right-of-way completion and utility relocation
2022 construction

Northcross Drive Extension
2021-2022 right-of-way completion and utility relocation
2022-2024 construction

Bailey Road Extension
2022 right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation
2023 construction

Hickory Street/NC 115 Intersection
2021 design
2022 right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation
2023 construction

As for the widening of West Catawba Avenue, Herron said “the NCDOT did indicate last week that they would be restarting the right-of-way acquisition for West Catawba.” However the revised design and construction schedule for this project which involves widening the road from two to four lanes has not yet been determined.
