Oct. 21. A dozen Home Depot associates, volunteers and military veterans worked Friday at the home of James D. Hopkins Jr., a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force for more than four years. Hopkins, who lives on Bon Meade Lane, suffered a stroke in July which paralyzed the left side of his body. Volunteers built a wheelchair ramp to make his home more accessible.
The Hopkins project is part of Home Depot’s annual Celebration of Service campaign, a nationwide effort led by Team Depot, which gives back to veterans between Sept. 1 and Veterans Day. In addition to Team Depot’s efforts, The Home Depot Foundation is pledging to grow its commitment to veteran-related causes to $250 million by 2020.
Hopkins was commander of VFW Post 9488 for three years. VFW has 7,400 chapters around the nation. Each chapter seeks to foster camaraderie, advocate and serve veterans, the military and their local community. VFW Post 9488 hosts events and shares resources to help veterans. Since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation has invested more than $160 million to provide safe housing to veterans, and along with the help of Team Depot volunteers, has transformed more than 26,700 homes for veterans. More info: www.homedepot.com/teamdepot.
