Special exhibit at the Cain Center highlights indigenous peoples

Nov. 14. A special exhibit open now through Jan. 11 at the Cain Center for the Arts showcases historical, traditional, and contemporary works from artists of Catawba Nation, Melungeon Heritage, the CHamoru Diaspora, Cherokee, Gullah, Lumbee and more.

The Melungeon Heritage Association, Catawba Cultural Center, and Brooke Gibbons provided critical support for the exhibit, officially known as “Generations: Highlighting Indigenous Peoples, Cultures, & Artwork.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 am to 4 pm.

Documentary screening

There will also be a special screening Nov. 21 at 6:30 pm of “Duality: A Collection of Afro Indigenous Perspectives.”

The documentary by award-winning filmmakers Kimberly M. Night (Black Indians NC) and Frederick D. Murphy (History Before Us) delves into the intersectionality of Indigenous and African American identities in the United States.

The screening is free, but RSVPs are requested.
