Ready, set, go: Mayors’ Fitness Challenge kicks off Sunday

March 10. The towns of Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville will kick off the 2023 Mayors’ Fitness Challenge Sunday, March 12, on the Bailey Road Park Football Field.

The 2-4 pm event is free to the public.

Wear blue for Cornelius

Participants are encouraged to wear colors representing their town: Blue for Cornelius, red for Davidson, and green for Huntersville.

Throughout the event, participants will rotate through local fitness-oriented businesses including Happy Habits, Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics and SweatNet.

At each of the stations, participants will go through fitness tests before participating in a group workout session. Each session will be similar to what the fitness organizations offer at their businesses and are appropriate for all levels and ages.

Event minutes count

Participation in the kick-off event will count toward active minutes for the week.

To wrap up the challenge on April 22, there will be a similar program. The results of the fitness test from the kick-off event will be compared with the results from the wrap-up event, giving each participant an idea of how much they have improved throughout the duration of the challenge.

In case of inclement weather, a decision about how to proceed will be made by the end of the business day Friday, March 10.

This story will be updated if there a delay or cancellation. The weather hotline 704-940-9637 will also be updated.

How it works

The challenge runs six weeks, March 12-April 22. At the end of six weeks, the town with the highest average active minutes per participant will be awarded the Fittest Community Trophy.

Registration is free but required for all participants.
