Proposed Red Line station could be located near Barley Market on Zion

Dec. 11. By Dave Vieser. If the Red Line becomes a reality, where will the Cornelius commuter station be located? It won’t be in the original spot. This fact was revealed at a December Town Board meeting as the commissioners and staff discussed the upcoming legislative agenda for 2025.

The Cornelius station was in front of the Antiquity development, but in light of the development that has occurred that area is no longer viable.

The new location being examined is farther north, perhaps around the Barley Market on Zion Avenue, according to Deputy Town Mayor Wayne Herron.

Background

The entire possibility of a commuter line is an open question. The Northern Meck towns have requested that the state legislature permit a referendum on a 1/2 cent sales tax to be submitted to voters next November. Some of the proceeds would go towards construction of the new line.

The referendum is expected to be discussed next year, according to State Senator Vicky Sawyer, chair of the Senate Transportation Committee.
