Jan. 5. By TL Bernthal. Fans of Poke Bros. don’t have to travel to Mooresville to satisfy their taste for fresh Hawaiian-inspired ingredients, from sushi for a traditional experience to shrimp, chicken or tofu bowls.
Poke Lake opened Wednesday in Shops at The Fresh Market, next to Fresh Chef. The restaurants are owned by partners Zhihua Zhu, who goes by Kyle and handles the day-to-day restaurant operations, and Zuyan Zhu, who handles permits, construction and financial concerns. The partners are not related.
Kyle Zhu says the Mooresville location at 510 River Hwy. is doing well and draws diners from everywhere.
Diners from Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville were numerous and asked often when a second, closer location would open, he says.
That spurred the partners to open in the 1,720-square-foot space in Cornelius at 20601 Chapel Torrence Road Suite 5B.
The new restaurant is slightly larger than the Mooresville one, and has seating for 30-35, he says. About a third of orders are to-go.
The menu features signature bowls with protein choices of salmon, tuna, shrimp or chicken. The menu denotes what is raw, spicy or contains gluten.
Prices range from $12.99 for the Honokaa or Pahala bowl to $14.49 for the Maui, Hawi or Molokai bowls.
Or you can create your own combination using the Poke Your Way option where you pick a base, add items such as edamame, cucumber, pineapple, seaweed salad, then pick a protein, add a sauce and top it off with sesame seeds, cashews, fried onions, crispy wontons or tempura flakes.
Side dishes include a spicy crab salad for $4.99; squid salad or chicken salad for $5.99; and a seaweed salad for $4.50.
For dessert, there are 12 flavors of Mochi ice cream, a confection made from Japanese mochi with an ice cream filling.
Pickup orders can be placed online.
Hours: 11 am – 9 pm daily.
