May 31. The Northern Regional Recreation Center will officially open June 24 with a ribbon-cutting and grand opening at 10 am. The new facility, located at 18121 Old Statesville Road/Hwy. 115 will open for MeckPass members June 13.
The opening has been delayed for months at a time because of COVID and resulting labor shortages.
Last year, county officials were shooting for a first-quarter opening this year. It was subsequently pushed to late March, mid-April, sometime in May and, now, it’s feeling quite official in June
The culprit: COVID-19 supply chain issues impacting the project schedules.
The 85,000 square-foot center, with an indoor track, gyms, exercise equipment, swimming pools and a greenhouse, is part fitness center, part community center, said Mecklenburg County Commissioner Elaine Powell, the North Meck representative on the county board.
