‘Never Forget’ 9-11 ceremony starts at 8:30 am

Sept. 11. The 9-11 Anniversary Ceremony, commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, starts at 8:30 am today at the “Never Forget” monument at Fire Station No. 1.

The three-hour event uses a tolling bell and moments of silence to mark the critical moments of that day 22 years ago. The ceremony will conclude at 11:30 am with a plaque dedication for a local first-responder and veteran who succumbed to a 9/11-related illness.

You may attend for the entire ceremony or drop in as you are able.

Location: Fire Station No. 1, 19729 S. Main St.

Schedule

8:30 am – Opening prayer

8:46 am – Hijackers crash American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

9:03 am – Hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

9:37 am – Hijackers crash American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon.

9:59 am – The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses.

10:03 am – United Airlines Flight 93 passengers counterattack their hijackers, and the plane crashes in Shanksville, PA.

10:28 am – The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses.

11 am –  Members of the Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue Department and the Brotherhood of the Carolina Retirees Association of the Fire Department of New York present a plaque in honor of fallen first-responder Robert Michael Foley, a New York City firefighter and Vietnam veteran US Army 82nd Airborne North Carolina.

The ceremony and vigil will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held inside Fire Station No. 1.
