NCDHHS reports COVID-19 cases still increasing

May 4. By Dave Yochum. The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services is reporting 11,848 COVID-19 cases statewide, an 8.5 percent increase from 10,923 on Friday.

The death toll statewide rose 7.8 percent to 430 as of 11 am today, up from 399 on Friday.

A total of 146,439 tests have been completed.

Gov. Roy Cooper may replace the current stay-at-home order with a less strict one in four days, if trends are going in the right direction.

While the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has been falling. There are now 498 people hospitalized due to COVID-19, according to DHHS.

Mecklenburg County, according to NCDHHS data, has 1,734 COVID-19 cases, and 50 deaths.

There are differences between county-reported data and state-reported data. Cornelius Today is using NC data for consistency and the ability to compare counties.

Mecklenburg continues to be the epicenter of COVID-19 in North Carolina. Similarly sized Wake County has 891 cases and only 19 deaths, according to NCDHHS.

Testing

There are many people with COVID-19 who may not be included in daily counts of laboratory-confirmed cases, including:

—People who had minimal or no symptoms and were not tested.

—People who had symptoms but did not seek medical care.

—People who sought medical care but were not tested.

—People with COVID-19 in whom the virus was not detected by testing.
