May 9. A national cosmetics and beauty chain will open a store in The Shops at the Fresh Market. Ulta Beauty, formerly known as Ulta Salon, will open later this year in about 9,000 square feet near the new Home Sense store.
Like Total Wine, which is also opening in the strip shopping at Torrence Chapel and West Catawba, Ulta requested and got a variance for the size of their sign based on the distance—290 feet—to the nearest roadway.
At the Board of Adjustment meeting yesterday, Ulta said strict enforcement of signage rules would make it difficult to identify the store from Torrence Chapel. According to constructionjournal.com, construction begins this month.

Ulta Beauty has about 1,355 stores across 50 states with about 250 of those stores located inside Target stores.
Ulta carries both high-end and low-end cosmetics, fragrances and haircare products. Each store also has a beauty salon.
During fiscal 2022, the Company opened 47 new stores, relocated 12 stores, and remodeled 20 stores.

Cornelius Commerce Center update
The Planning Board, meanwhile, held over consideration of a rezoning for the Cornelius Commerce Center on Bailey to June 12. A new site plan was submitted in late April and as discussions continued it became apparent that the board members did not feel comfortable taking a vote without a recommendation and more information from the town planning staff.
