Although Hwy. 73 is a key east-west artery in Lake Norman, it traverses only a small portion of Cornelius. That section will be the focus of a special drop-in a meeting that starts at 7 pm Monday March 12 at Cornelius Town Hall.
There will be no formal program, but residents will have the opportunity to review DOT plans for the potential four- to six-lane thoroughfare. The sections of Cornelius which would be most impacted include Sterling Bay, Wood Duck Cove and the Norman Island communities.
Tentative plans for Highway 73 call for the road to be built in a “super structure” divided highway format, which significantly limits left turns onto the highway. The DOT requested the meeting to explain the reason for the super structure, and to discuss any possible options among residents.
Current plans call for widening to begin in 2022, after the acquisition of needed adjacent property.
