Oct. 21. Don’t Lose Heart, a project to empower the cultural preservation efforts of historic Black communities in North Mecklenburg, debuts as a live, storytelling production Nov. 2  at the Cain Center for the Arts.

Helmed by writer and poet Maurice J. Norman, Don’t Lose Heart blends documentary poetry, family histories, and live performance to create a dynamic space where community voices are amplified. This project goes beyond traditional storytelling—each story is brought to life through the lens of personal histories and genealogies, woven together to reflect the collective experiences of these deeply rooted Black communities.

“This production is about reclaiming our heritage, honoring our elders, and ensuring that future generations understand the strength and resilience of these communities,” said Norman. “It’s not just a performance; it’s a testament to the power of storytelling as a tool for cultural preservation.”

Audiences can expect an emotionally rich experience, where personal stories are infused with art and history, delivering a performance that is both heartfelt and historically significant. In collaboration with local families, Norman has crafted each narrative to highlight a unique perspective of the Smithville neighborhood, emphasizing their local cultural impact.

Fostering dialogue

Don’t Lose Heart will debut on Nov. 2 at The Cain Center for the Arts, with an aim to foster dialogue about the importance of cultural preservation and inspire solidarity among neighboring communities.

Don’t Lose Heart has been brought from page to stage thanks to the financial support of the Arts and Science Council Cultural Visions Grant in addition to the Arts Infusion Fund.
