March 5. By Dave Vieser. A mixed-use project on West Catawba will be the subject of a Cornelius Planning Board public hearing this Monday March 8 beginning at 6:30 pm. Some neighbors have spoken out against developer Jake Palillo’s plan.
Palillo is seeking rezoning to develop approximately 12.2 acres on West Catawba Avenue between Harbor View Drive and H M Junker Drive. He plans to build 252 multi-family units and approximately 4,865 square feet of commercial space on what is known as the Junker Property.
Opponents cite traffic and the failure of West Catawba Avenue to be widened on schedule as major impediments. In response, Palillo believes his project would spruce up a portion of the town which he compared to a junk yard.
Most of the property is currently undeveloped and vacant, except for the White House Gardens facility.
