Heads up: Meck County cautions residents about tax letter

April 14. Mecklenburg County is warning property owners about a possible fraudulent letter that has surfaced, claiming the recipient is behind on their local property tax payments and demanding payment.  The letter urges the recipient to call a phone number to prevent action.

However, the organization demanding payment is not affiliated with Mecklenburg County or the Office of the Tax Collector. Mecklenburg County views this outreach as suspicious and recommends that residents exercise extreme caution when sharing personal or financial information with any organization.

The letter may cite a legitimate property tax delinquency, which is an easily attainable public record. Unpaid property tax bills for 2024 were considered delinquent after Jan. 6, 2025. Those unpaid tax bills are listed at Tax.MeckNC.gov and were advertised on April 6 in the Charlotte Observer, per N.C. statute.

Mecklenburg County offers several legitimate programs to help homeowners with their property tax bills and other economic assistance.

–N.C. Property Tax Relief: Various exemptions are available for senior citizens, disabled residents, veterans, and businesses. Some programs have income requirements. Most applications must be submitted to the Mecklenburg County Assessor’s Office by June 1. Residents can visit CAO.MeckNC.gov or call 980-314-4226 to learn more.

–HOMES: Helping Out Mecklenburg’s homeowners with Economic Support, is a seasonal program designed to help residents reduce the annual cost of homeownership. HOMES provides economic assistance grants to qualifying Mecklenburg County residential homeowners. The application period typically begins July 1. Visit MeckNC.gov/4HOMES to learn more.

Any Mecklenburg County property owner who receives a suspicious letter—or who has questions about correspondence or the status of their property tax bill—is encouraged to contact the Office of the Tax Collector at 704-336-7600 or email Tax@MeckNC.gov.
