Oct. 22. Potassium Iodide will be distributed free of charge to residents and employers within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) of the McGuire Nuclear Power Plant from 9 am to 1 pm Oct. 24 at the Alexander Middle School in Huntersville.
This distribution was planned for this past spring but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Potassium Iodide (KI) is an over-the-counter medication that can protect the thyroid if someone is exposed to radioactive iodine during a radiological emergency.
If taken at the appropriate time and at the proper dosage, KI fills the thyroid with stable iodine to prevent radioactive iodine from being absorbed, therefore reducing the risk of possible damage of the thyroid.
In the event of a radiological emergency, residents will be advised of protective actions through the Emergency Alert System. KI should be kept in a safe, accessible location and should only be taken when instructed by public health authorities.
