Drowning victim who jumped from a sailboat Saturday identified

Aug. 12. The drowning victim in Lake Norman off Belle Isle on Saturday has been identified as Duane Andrew Strong. North Carolina Wildlife reports that he jumped from a moving sailboat to swim.

He was not wearing a life jacket.

At approximately 10:21 am on Saturday, a 911 call was placed on a drowning that occurred on Lake Norman near the R1 Marker. The closest address was at the end of Belle Isle Drive in Cornelius.

Drowning occurred between Belle Isle and the power plant

A Wildlife spokesman said after entering the water, the 64-year-old began to struggle with swimming. Rescue efforts by others on board were not successful.

The body was recovered at 6:10 pm by the Cornelius Fire Dept. near the location of the incident. Huntersville Volunteer Fire Dept. also participated in the seven-hour search as well as the Denver Fire Dept., Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue, Iredell County Sheriff, and Cornelius Police.
