COVID update: NC hospitalizations top 4,000 mark

Jan. 12. COVID-related hospitalizations statewide broke through the 4,000 mark today, hitting 4,098. New daily COVID cases climbed to 25,445 in today’s COVID report from the NC Dept. of Health & Human Services.

There were 17,705 new cases in yesterday’s report.

One year ago

Last year on this date the NCDHHS reported 6,851 new COVID cases, and 3,940 North Carolinians hospitalized due to COVID.

Deaths

There were 57 new COVID deaths reported today statewide, two of them in Huntersville. A total of 19,763 North Carolinians have died from COVID, according to NCDHHS data. There have been 80 COVID deaths in 28078.

Positivity rate

The statewide positivity rate remains just above 30 percent for a fifth reporting day in a row. In Mecklenburg, the 14-day average positivity rate climbed to 33.6 percent.

In November, the county said masking requirements could be relaxed when the positivity rate was at 5 percent or below for seven straight days.

Mecklenburg

There were 2,935 new COVID cases reported county-wide between yesterday and today, up from 1,688 new cases reported yesterday.

North Mecklenburg (change from Tuesday)

• Cornelius: 58 new cases, 5,259 cumulative total, 32 deaths cumulative total.

• Davidson: 42 new cases, 3,074 cumulative total, 20 deaths cumulative total.

• Huntersville: 124 new cases, 11,740 cumulative total, 80 deaths cumulative total.
