COVID update: Lifting mask mandate a real possibility as positive testing trends down

Nov. 8. The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services today reported 1,103 new cases of the coronavirus statewide, as well as a 5.1 percent positivity rate — just above the the goal of 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Mecklenburg County Commissioners have lowered the threshold for lifting the county mask mandate. Instead of requiring the County’s COVID-19 positivity rate to be below 5 percent for 30 straight days, the board agreed that if the seven-day positivity rate is below 5 percent for seven consecutive days, then the mask health rule will automatically end.

Testing

During the past week, an average of 5.5 percent of individuals who were tested in Mecklenburg County were positive for COVID-19. Over the past 14 days, the Mecklenburg positivity rate has been trending downward. In today’s NCDHHS report it was 5.3 percent.

Hospitalizations

The NCDHHS reported statewide hospitalizations at 1,040 today, down from 1,144 Friday.

Deaths

The NCDHHS today reported 66 new COVID-related deaths statewide.

Mecklenburg

In Mecklenburg County, there were 365 new cases and one new death in today’s NCHDDS report. (The previous report was Friday.)

North Mecklenburg (change from Friday)

• Cornelius: 0 new cases, 4,041 cumulative total, 31 deaths cumulative total.

• Davidson: 4 new cases, 2,354 cumulative total, 19 deaths cumulative total.

• Huntersville: 29 new cases, 8,871 cumulative total, 74 deaths cumulative total.
