Jan. 19. COVID-related hospitalizations statewide reached 4,689 in today’s coronavirus update from the NC Dept. of Health & Human Services. Hospitalizations were at 2,722 on Jan. 3, the first reporting day of the month. On Jan. 19, 2021, the NCDHHS reported 3,881 North Carolinians hospitalized with COVID.

Deaths

There were 37 new COVID deaths reported today statewide. There have been 20,037 deaths since the pandemic began almost two years ago.

New cases

There were 17,374 new cases in today’s report.

Positivity rate

The statewide positivity rate is 35.9 percent according to NCDHHS. In Mecklenburg, the positivity rate was 33.9 percent in today’s report, the second day in a row the 14-day average has eased slightly. It was 35.8 percent on Jan 14.

There were 1,859 new COVID cases reported county-wide between yesterday and today.

North Mecklenburg (change from Tuesday)

• Cornelius: 28 new cases, 5,639 cumulative total, 32 deaths cumulative total.

• Davidson: 21 new cases, 3,352 cumulative total, 20 deaths cumulative total.

• Huntersville: 55 new cases, 12,749 cumulative total, 81 deaths cumulative total.
