Feb.1. The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services is reporting that COVID-related hospitalizations have fallen for the third reporting day in a row, falling to 4,786 in today’s coronavirus update. It’s the first time COVID hospitalizations statewide have been under 4,800 since Jan. 20.
On Dec. 31, there were 2,387 North Carolinians hospitalized due to COVID. Hospitalizations related to the coronavirus peaked at 5,158 on Jan. 27.
Deaths
The NCDHHS reported 60 new COVID-related deaths today, none of them in Mecklenburg County. There have been no new COVID-related deaths reported in the three towns of North Mecklenburg for eight days.
New cases
There were 8,757 new cases statewide in today’s report.
Positivity rate
The statewide COVID positivity rate is 29.8 percent.
—In Mecklenburg, the 14-day trailing average was 30.4 percent.

There were 866 new COVID cases countywide.
North Mecklenburg (change from Monday)
• Cornelius: 26 new cases, 6,276 cumulative total, 32 deaths cumulative total.
• Davidson: 17 new cases, 3,793 cumulative total, 20 deaths cumulative total.
• Huntersville: 65 new cases, 14,301 cumulative total, 82 deaths cumulative total.
