Sept. 14. By Dave Yochum. With winds picking up around Cornelius, Hurricane Florence is no longer just a concept here. The Category 2 storm is slowly on its way from the coast to points west, including Charlotte and Lake Norman.
The wind will pick up today, with rain coming and winds of 30 mph on up to 50 tomorrow. Rainfall of 10 inches or more is possible; rain-soaked earth may give up on wet, wind-blown trees. Saturday and Sunday will be intense.
Gas is flowing at four Cornelius gas stations: The BP at Westmoreland/Hwy. 21; Cashion’s at Hwy. 21/Catawba; Kangaroo at Catawba/One Norman; and Exxon/Palm at Catawba/Magnolia Estates.
Anticipating historic major damage across North Carolina from Hurricane Florence, Gov. Roy Cooper requested a presidential disaster declaration to expedite the process of receiving federal aid for cleanup and recovery.
“We know this massive storm will cause incredible damage and I’m asking Washington to act quickly so federal recovery help can come as soon as possible,” Cooper said.
The Town of Cornelius has also declare a local state of emergency. It allows the Town to access emergency management funds if necessary.
