Dec. 26. Working with seven local churches, Our Towns Habitat for Humanity dedicated its final 2018 home to Akisha Trapp and her two daughters, Tylia, 14, and Breanna, 11.
The local congregations came together for the Faith Coalition Build, sponsoring the build and providing volunteers. Sponsoring churches include Elevation Church, Grace Covenant Church, Mt. Zion United Methodist, Life Fellowship, St. Albans Episcopal Church, Radiant Life Fellowship Church and Community in Christ Church. Also contributing were Davidson College Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter and the Housing Opportunity Foundation.
Partnering with Our Towns Habitat for Humanity while working fulltime as a nursing assistant, Trapp completed her 400 sweat equity hours while documenting the build with photos along the way. She wanted to buy her own home as an example to her daughters that even as a single mom, you can still accomplish your goals.
“I wanted to show my two girls that, whether you’re married or not, you can do it on your own. I’m teaching them to walk by faith and not by sight. I’m showing them how to stand on their own two feet. “This is where we’re going to cry our tears, share our happy times, share family time and grow together,” she said.
Our Towns Habitat for Humanity is a well-respected 501(c)(3) organization bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope in North Mecklenburg and Iredell.
