Board says aye aye to LKN patrol plan

April 2. By Dave Vieser. The Cornelius Board of Commissioners approved an agreement with Mecklenburg County which will have the town continue primary law enforcement coverage of Lake Norman waters and shoreline within Mecklenburg County. In addition, the town police department will now also provide law enforcement coverage for locations within the town’s unincorporated, or ETJ (Extra territorial jurisdiction).

ETJ patrol was previously handled by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD). The town will receive $133,000 each year from the county for ETJ law enforcement.
In addition, the county will pay the town the following amounts for the lake patrol services:

FY 2019: $500,000
FY: 2020-FY 2023: $460,000

No funds for vehicle replacements in the years 2019, 2022 or 2023 will be provided by the county. “About 75 miles of the 90 miles on Lake Norman shoreline in Mecklenburg County are located within Cornelius,” said Assistant Town Manager Andrew Grant.  “This agreement will represent an increase in the amount the town will receive from the county for this service.”
