The CMS schools in Cornelius have been recognized as among the best system-wide.

“While no educational system is perfect, we are truly blessed with high-performance local schools. The quality of our public education is a significant ingredient for our quality of life,” said Mayor Woody Washam, himself a product of CMS.

• Cornelius Elementary School is located at 21126 Catawba Ave., not far from the library. Jessica Holbrook is the principal and the school serves students in grades K-5.

There are students from more than 10 countries and they speak 16 languages in addition to English.

It is one of the older schools in the region, dating back to 1930. That said, voters approved a bond issue last fall which will cover the cost of building a new school on existing CMS property behind the current location.
