Aug. 29. UPDATED 5:30 pm. You couldn’t tell it from the bus traffic around Cornelius this morning, but Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools still have 90 bus driver vacancies.
More than 1,000 CMS buses started rolling before 5 am today, however traffic flowed pretty well on Catawba Avenue all morning. CMS spokeswoman Yaviri Escalera said she’d heard of no glitches system-wide when we checked at 9:30 this morning.
BTW, if you’re interested in one of those bus driver jobs, the pay is $12.14 an hour for nine months out of the year. Click here to apply
Cornelius Today caught up with students—and a grandparent—at a bus stop on Church Street. They were ready for school, mostly. Eighth-grader Nathan Colbert said he was ready for the day to be over. He said he wants to be a comedian. We get that.
CMS Board Member Rhonda Lennon, a Cornelius resident, said the first day went well. “Our amazing staff is back in full swing with teaching and learning. The only hiccup was some traffic delays,” she said.
Indeed, serious afternoon delays occurred on Bailey Road, where both Hough High and Bailey Middle are located, not to mention the Bailey’s Glen retirement community and other new neighborhoods.
Here are the schools in Cornelius. You might want to watch out for traffic near the start and end times.
