A month of fun: October is here with lots of things to do and Halloween, too

Tuesday, Oct. 1

Davidson’s National Night Out

5-7 pm | Oct. 1. National Night Out (NNO) is an annual crime prevention and community-building event sponsored by the Davidson Police Department to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-resident partnerships, and neighborhood cohesiveness. This year’s event promises a festive atmosphere with music, family-friendly activities, educational opportunities for residents of all ages, food, and feature a special EV Village with a variety of electric vehicles on display, including the Davidson Police Department’s new F150 Ford Lightning. There is no cost for the public to attend. Parking will be available yet limited; residents are encouraged to walk or ride their bikes to the event. Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St., Davidson.

A Night for Paws

6 pm | Oct. 1. A night of cocktails, food, entertainment, live and silents auctions, raffles, live music and more to support Lake Norman Humane’s life-saving work for animals. Tickets $150 per person; available online under events tab. Lake Norman Humane, 2106 Charlotte Hwy., Mooresville.

Chronicles of Yarnia Discussion Group

Ben Sollee Trio

Film Screening: Cine Casual and WDAV Present Los Hermanos

7:30-10 pm | Oct. 4. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Cine Casual and WDAV Classical Public Radio have partnered to present a free outdoor screening of the award-winning documentary Los Hermanos. Renowned violinist Ilmar Gavilán, one of the two classical musician brothers featured in Los Hermanos, will be a special guest joining WDAV General Manager Frank Dominguez for a pre-film Q&A and live solo performance during the pre-screening program. A native of Havana, Cuba, Gavilán is a founding member of the Grammy award-winning Harlem Quartet. The film features virtuoso Afro-Cuban-born brothers—violinist Ilmar and pianist Aldo—live on opposite sides of a geopolitical chasm a half-century wide. Tracking their parallel lives in New York and Havana, their reunion, and their first performances together, Los Hermanos/The Brothers offers a nuanced, often startling view of estranged nations through the lens of music and family. Live Under The Oaks

Symphony Under the Stars

7 pm | Oct. 4. Featuring the Lake Norman Philharmonic. Maestro Eduardo Cedeño and the talented musicians of the Lake Norman Philharmonic will take the stage, performing classical and contemporary masterpieces. Ghost Hunt

6:30-9:30 pm | Oct. 4. Take part in an authentic ghost hunt of the building and grounds (weather permitting) using real investigative tools led by members of the Charlotte Area Paranormal Society (CAPS). Blessing of the Animals

10:30 am service | Oct. 6. Food and music from about 11:45 am. St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church will host its annual “Blessing of the Animals” at the church’s outdoor lawn stage in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. The entire community – but especially pets – are welcome in celebrating this special day with a service that recognizes our beloved companion animals. Lake Norman Humane will be on-site with a furry friend or two available for adoption. Whether you’re looking to adopt a new pet or simply want to support our local animal rescue efforts, there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved and contribute. The event will also feature live music by Envision. Jetton Street between Clean Juice and Mine by Sandy will be blocked off to accommodate the event, but there is plenty of public parking at the Circles @ 30 for festival goers.

Lake Norman’s Slightly Haunted Trail Hike

6-8 pm | Oct. 25. Get ready for Halloween at Lake Norman State Park. Come dressed up if you would like, and join us on a evening hike starting at the Boat Launch. Candy we be handed out. Halloween Treat Trail & Outdoor Movie

Trick or Treating at Birkdale Village

10 am – noon | Oct. 26. Come dressed in your costumes and trick or treat at Birkdale Village’s participating retailers and restaurants.
