Free ice cream: Summer’s over

20161112_141222Nov. 12. Yup, they’re giving away free ice cream cones at Carolina Cones on North Main Street. It’s the last day the business is open before closing for the winter. The high today is only going to be 58 degrees and AccuWeather says we’re in for a freeze tonight. But it was just last week, Nov. 3 to be precise, that we broke 80 degrees. Free ice cream is only today, one cone per person. Carolina Cones reopens in March. The song playing outside was “We Need a Little Christmas,” which includes the line, “But, Auntie Mame, it’s one week past Thanksgiving Day now!” Since the time the song was written, the phenomenon of Christmas creep has resulted in the normal holiday season beginning much earlier than it once did, which has led to more recent recordings changing the line to, “But, Auntie Mame, it’s one week from Thanksgiving Day now!” As fas as the weather is concerned, look for frost overnight. The National Weather Service tomorrow will be: “Clear, with a low around 32. North northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.”
