May 12. By Dave Vieser. More than six months behind schedule, things are finally beginning to happen for the storefronts in Antiquity. Truliant Federal Credit Union is open, work is progressing on several other storefronts and Novant Health just agreed to occupy Building E, an office complex to be built on Zion Avenue west of Harris Teeter.

But it’s still unclear when a mainstay of Cornelius business, the old New Method Cleaners, will open. Renamed Roger’s Cleaners in Cornelius, the owners have been without a local presence for months. Their original building was demolished.

“While we’re pleased with our Mooresville location, we still plan to open a second store at Antiquity,” said Sybil Myers of Rogers Cleaners. “We understand they are back there working again, but we really can’t project an opening date at this time.”

Truliant is now open; officials plan a late June grand opening. A Huntersville location opened last August. The credit union has 195,000 member-owners with assets approaching $2 billion in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

When Cornelius Today/Business Today inquired about the retail stores in January, Roger Cook of Alexis-based Synergy Resources, a subcontractor, said work was held up by power issues. At some point, sewer connections also became a problem.

Besides Truliant and Rogers Cleaners, other stores signed up for the 28,000 square feet of space dedicated to small retail include Dunkin Donuts, Zen Massage, Great Clips, Bellarose Boutique, Magnolia Nails, Pita Pit, and University Dental Associates.

The new stores face Catawba Avenue east of Main Street, within walking distance of the residential section of Antiquity. They will also be accessible from a large parking area behind the stores which stretches southward to the new Harris Teeter, which opened late last year. Peyton Gehron of New South Properties says the opening dates for the new retailers will vary by each store.
