Huntersville Planning Board votes 4-3 against Birkdale plan

Birkdale Village | Jamestown LP

Feb. 26. The Huntersville Town Board voted 4-3 against plans to add a 125-room hotel, 150 multi-family units, commercial space and an office building to Birkdale Village, the town’s largest taxpayer.

Jamestown, the new owner of the mixed-use project, emphasized the economic benefits of the plan, which is largely the same as an earlier plan from the previous owner, North American Properties.

Brick and mortar retail is suffering nationwide. Joann Fabrics is the latest retailer to announce it will close stores in 2025, as well as Big Lots, Macy’s, Kohl’s and JCPenney.

The Huntersville Board of Commissioners will take up the rezoning request on March 18.

The new plan includes removing two buildings and building a six-story office structure, a six-story multifamily building and a five-story hotel. Two parking decks would be replaced with a seven-story, 537-space parking deck and a four-story, 291-space parking deck.

  1. Did the Planning Board or the Town Board vote against? (Headline versus first sentence – a little confusing)
