SPEAS Lecture: “An Epidemiologist in the Land of Ethics” by Lisa Lee, Ph.D., Population Health Sciences Virginia Tech

7:30 – 8:30pm | Feb. 3. Lisa M. Lee serves as associate vice president for research and innovation, leading the Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance at Virginia Tech. Lee is an expert on contact tracing, public health surveillance, ethics and other topics related to infectious diseases that became highly sought after by members of the media reporting on COVID-19. Special Art Exhibit: Sir Will

10 am – 4 pm |Tuesday-Friday. Sir Will is a multi-disciplinary artist specializing in video, mixed media, and photography. Deeply inspired by the cultural styles and traditions developed by Black communities in the South, his work celebrates the vibrant essence of his upbringing. Growing up with limited access to representation of Black artists, Sir Will has forged his own artistic identity, drawing heavily from the South’s warm colors, cars and fashion and the influence of the strong women in his family. Thursday, Feb. 6

Speakeasy at Cain

6-8:30 pm | Feb. 6. A night of food, libations, music and dancing on stage at Cain Center for the Arts. This is a fundraising event for Cain Center’s community mission. In addition to directly supporting Cain Center’s arts and  music mission, your Speakeasy ticket includes: food stations, open bar, live jazz quartet Holly Hopkins & Friends and dancing. Tickets are $75 per person (note: $40 per ticket is considered a tax-deductible gift). Cain Center for the Arts, Catawba Avenue.

Dr. Polly Louise Arnold

Smith Lecture Presents Dr. Polly Louise Arnold, University of California, Berkeley

7:30- 9 pm | Feb. 6. Polly Louise Arnold, University of California, Berkeley, College of Chemistry, presents  “Putting the F in Chemistry: A Molecular Exploration through the Footnotes of the Periodic Table, the Technology-Critical Rare Earth Elements, and Our Nuclear Waste Legacy.” The subtleties of structure and bonding in compounds of the f-block, the heaviest naturally occurring elements are still poorly-understood. Yet a fundamental understanding is needed to develop environmentally cleaner ways to extract technology-critical rare earth metals, and for the safe, long-term handling of our nuclear waste legacies. This lecture will explore what chemistry can teach us about these complicated but important metals. Davidson College, Sloan Music Center Tyler-Tallman Recital Hall.

Owl Prowl

6-7:30 pm | Feb. 7. Dive into the nightlife of owls during an Owl Prowl at the Carolina Raptor Center. $30 for non-members; $25 for members. Must be at least 10 years old to attend. Limited space. Carolina Raptor Center, 6000 Sample Road, Huntersville.

Baby Shower at Carolina Raptor Center

10 am – 3 pm | Feb. 8. Every spring, Raptor Hospital takes in dozens of baby raptors who need a little help growing big and strong before returning to the wild. Enjoy a heartwarming day on the Raptor Trail to celebrate baby raptors and the work dedicated team puts in to help them along in their journeys. Raptor Hospital staff members will be on the trail to demonstrate the special care these birds receive. Learn about the work it takes to care for a baby raptor, from special feeding techniques to the tools we use to keep them warm. Baby-themed programs throughout the day. Included with admission price. Euchre Tournament

12:30 pm check-in, play starts at 1 pm | Feb. 9. Grab your favorite partner and for a $30 entry fee, you can stake your claim to be Euchre Champion of Lost Worlds. Super Bowl LIX

Kick off at 6:30 pm | Feb. 9. It’s a rematch from two years ago between the Eagles and Chiefs, taking place in New Orleans. You can watch it on Fox.
