Although the site at W. Catawba and Nantz has been cleared, 7-Eleven ‘not moving forward’

Dec. 20. By Dave Vieser. This has not been a good week for development projects in Cornelius. First, we learned that the retail/commercial portion of the Alexander Farms project has ground to a halt. Now, the convenience store scheduled to be built near the Nantz Road/West Catawba Ave intersection is also in doubt.

“It is our understanding that the gas station/convenience store tenant (7-Eleven) is not moving forward with this project,” said Cornelius Planning Director Rox Burhans. “As of now, a new gas station/convenience store tenant is being sought by the developer.”

Efforts to reach the developers have been unsuccessful.

Some site preparation has been completed including a stretch of pavement which will eventually be used for a Nantz Road extension. However, there has been no activity at the site for several weeks.

The original plan was for 7-Eleven to relocate from their older building farther north on Catawba Avenue.

Nantz Road is to the left in this site plan

  1. Are there still plans to continue Nantz Rd on the opposite side of W Catawba?

  3. Thanks to 7-11 for bowing out of this development fiasco. This site was never a good choice for any kind of development. Yet the developer spent many months trying to level a hill into a valley in order make some level ground. Now the wooded area has been destroyed and the neighbors are left with silt runoff from the bare ground. Like the farm, this has been another misguided venture. But that doesn’t mean that we will stop approving these projects.

  4. This is the reason there are bonds required for involvement in projects. Apparently we are lacking in this area as these tools are designed to keep this exact thing from happening. Our leadership needs to require said protections to keep projects from being vacated without consequence.

  5. Again the price of eggs going up, up as once again our town leaders (?) have yet more eggs on their faces after two more fiascos. Is anyone capable of creating guidelines/ requirements to protect the town from these fiascos that keep getting approved?
