Winners: Helfrich, park bonds

Nov. 5. By Dave Vieser. [Updated 11 pm] Democratic Beth Helfrich held an early lead in the race for NC House District 98.

FINAL 11 of 11 precincts reporting

Beth Helfrich (D) 26,809 or 52.13%
Melinda Bales (R) 24,616 or 47.87%

Helfrich had 62.61 percent of the early vote vs. 37.39 percent for Republican challenger Melinda Bales.

Park bonds 4 of 4 precincts reporting

The $20 million parks bond referendum in Cornelius coasted to an easy victory.

Yes: 10,996 or 59.53%
No: 7,475 or 40.47%

NC House District 98 opened earlier this year when incumbent John Bradford, a Republican, decided not to run for re-election.

I hope never again to see a race in which a candidate bails on her integrity as thoroughly as Melinda Bales, in allowing and not publicly denouncing the smear tactics of the PAC working on her behalf. Those disgusting flyers that landed in mailboxes day after day: What a waste of money, resources, and time. It does not speak well of someone’s leadership ability who disclaims responsibility for a hatchet job from which she hopes to benefit. I am very glad LKN voters saw through it.

  2. I hope the Lake Norman area gets to see some of the $20 million! I have a feeling it will all be used down in Charlotte! UGH!
