Parents reunited with Bailey Middle students after bomb threat

Parents wait at Foamex to pick up Bailey Middle students

Sept. 16. Cornelius Police are investigating a pipe bomb threat that resulted in the evacuation of Bailey Middle School and a modified lockdown at nearby Hough High.

The threat came in to the school by phone at 10:30 am.

More than 15 buses shuttled Bailey students to the old Foamex plant parking lot at the corner of Bailey and Old Statesville Road. Students were shuttled by grade—sixth, seventh and eighth, with eighth being the last to leave Bailey Road Park.

No bomb was found during a search of Bailey Middle which included police dogs. A plastic pipe found outside one of the mobile classrooms was determined to have been there for “quite some time.” There was no threat to students or staff, police said.

Calling it a “very stressful day” for Cornelius Police, Mayor Woody Washam said “investigations continue at this time.”

Davidson Police and Huntersville Police provided assistance during the incident.
