July 11. A new feature-length movie by indie filmmaker Glenn Roberson was filmed inside and outside the Oak Street Mill in downtown Cornelius “pretty extensively,” as well as the Old Town Public House.

“When First We Practice to Deceive” is available on a half-dozen streaming services, including Tubi, the No. 1 free ad-supported entertainment streamer.

The movie is the first full-length production for Roberson who lives n the Mallard Creek/University area of Charlotte. The 61-year-old went to Statesville High School and the University of South Carolina.

As a Charlotte region entrepreneurial filmmaker, Roberson wanted to support the local film industry as much as possible. The film, which is self-funded, cost $100,000 to produce.

“I did my best to create a project that showcased local and regional actors and featured amazing local musicians and settings,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to cast new and more experienced talent who really brought the story I wrote to life.”

He also worked with the film studies program at UNC Charlotte and brought on some recent graduates as crew, in addition to professionals.

“The original concept for the movie changed several times, as I incorporated aspects of storytelling that interest me, and that I hope also are compelling for the audience,” he said.

The film was designed to be a fun watch with enough tension to propel the plot, but with minimal actual violence or profanity, Roberson, who had a photography studio in Oak Street Mill, said.

Other film locations include Charlotte, Troutman and Mount Pleasant.

Actors include James Roseman, Aubrey Rogers, Sofia Chambon and Kyle Riggs.
