Hurricane Hugo: Sept. 1989 National Weather Service

May 10. Around midnight on Sept. 22, 1989 Hurricane Hugo made landfall just north of Charleston as a Category 4 storm and then made its way to Charlotte with 100 mph winds.

WBTV reported that Charlotte was covered in downed trees lining the streets or atop power lines.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported the above-normal 2023 Atlantic hurricane season had 20 named storms, ranking fourth for the most-named storms in a year since 1950.

2024 forecast

Colorado State University hurricane researchers are predicting an extremely active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

The CSU Tropical Weather and Climate team is predicting 23 named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30.

Although Mecklenburg County is located inland from the coast, rain and wind can cause damage hundreds of miles inland. Much of the region lost power for days on end.
