Director’s Choice Exhibit Opening Reception

6:30-8:30 pm | Feb. 2. Celebrating a commitment to the families and residents of Lake Norman. Cain Center’s Visual Arts and Education Director Simone El Bey has curated a special exhibit showcasing local artists that the Cain Center has come to love as an organization. These artists believe in our mission, and their work reflects the camaraderie of community. This exhibit includes artwork from various mediums, with each artist supporting Cain Center for the Arts with their submission. 50% of the proceeds made from the exhibit will support the continuation and expansion of these initiatives. The other 50% will go to the exhibiting artists in support of our local visual arts community. Exhibit on display through March 29. The Cain Center for the Arts gallery is open 10 am – 4 pm Tuesday – Friday.

Jocelyn Hagen: The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci

The Charlotte Master Chorale Chamber Singers present Art and Science, a meeting at the intersection of creativity and design anchored by the North Carolina premiere of Jocelyn Hagen’s multimedia symphony,The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, which utilizes the latest in video syncing technology to bring Leonardo’s words and drawings to life.

Cornelius Youth Orchestra concert

Sweetgrass Basket Weaving Workshop

10 am – noon | Feb. 10.  Sweetgrass baskets are one of America’s oldest crafts of African origin. This workshop will include all the materials to make a small sweetgrass basket: starter basket (round) to be used to create a small fruit basket with a handle, sweetgrass, palmetto fronds; tools are provided. $80. Local Black History Makers

Noon – 3 pm | Feb.10. Historic Rosedale will be hosting four African American community members who will discuss their journeys and accomplishments.

12 pm: Kim Butler, Gospel and classically trained singer will perform.

12:30 pm: Harvey Boyd, a native of Matthews North Carolina, designed the Mecklenburg County Seal in 1963 when he was 19 years old. Boyd will be available after his lecture for a book signing of his memoir “Evolution: Honoring The True First In Freedom Seal.” There will be a limited number of copies of this book available for sale, and guests should feel free to bring their own copies of the memoir for signing as well.              

1:30 pm: Martha Rucker is a celebrated local artist and author. Her works range from a three-part Children’s series entitled “The Adventures of Peanut,” to more somber titles that deal with heavier adult topics. Guests should feel free to bring their own copies of any of Rucker’s books for signing as well.              

2:30 pm: Kyle Smith, is a descendent of Nat (Caldwell), an enslaved blacksmith who worked at Historic Rosedale  and trained many others in the Charlotte area in blacksmithing. Collaborative Quilting Workshop with Erika Diamond

Fairy House Festival 2024

10 am – 4 pm | Feb. 24. Fairy Houses are whimsical habitats built by children, families, gardeners, and nature lovers. This is a festival that everyone can enjoy and building fairy houses reconnects people with nature. Join us for this annual festival that will inspire appreciation of the environment with storytelling, children’s crafts, activities, and games – all focused on fairies and nature. Fairy, gnome and other appropriate costumes are encouraged but not required. Food vendors will be on site. Advance purchase of tickets is required. Ages 5 and older,  $7 per person. Sons of Mystro

Sons of Mystro

Doors 7 pm, show 8 pm | Feb. 24. Brothers Malcom and Umoja learned to play violin through South Florida’s public school system and attended Dillard High School for the Performing Arts. Local Black History Makers

11 am – 3:30 pm | Feb. 24. Black History Month is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans both nationally and locally. Historic Rosedale will be hosting African American community members who will discuss their journeys and accomplishments. Free.

11 am: Hugh Dussek’s presentation will focus on the history of blacksmithing at Rosedale, the story of how Rosedale built the blacksmith shop, and the history of metals around the world.

12:30 pm: Nelli Ashford is a self-taught folk artist from Mecklenburg County. During the 2012 national election campaign, 11 of Ashford’s works were featured at the Democratic National Convention Committee headquarters in Charlotte.

1:30 pm: Naomi Rankin is a local artisan who has created many gorgeous quilts in the traditional style of enslaved individuals. Rosedale has a number of her quilts on display.   

2:30 pm: Tamia Allen Williams is a descendent of George Washington Caldwell, one of a long line of blacksmiths at Rosedale. She will be discussing the complexity of African American History and the hurt and hope it can bring to those affected by it, as well as the importance of its teaching.

All day: Blacksmith Demonstrations. The Rosedale Smithy will be open all day and staffed by head blacksmith Jason Blanchett.

Davidson College Chorale: Davidson Sings!

Cain Center for the Arts partners with Melissa Ohlman-Roberge and Metrolina Theatre Association on a new initiative that puts the area’s most skilled theater students together with a challenging piece of musical theater for an exciting process resulting in a unique staged concert. The musical follows Jeremy Heere, an average teenager until he finds out about “The Squip,” a tiny supercomputer that promises to bring him everything he desires most: a date with Christine, an invite to the raddest party of the year and a chance to survive life in his suburban New Jersey high school.Tickets $20-$30. Home Grown Junior!

Hours vary | March 29. Home Grown is an annual mixed media exhibit celebrating our artistic community. Artists of all levels are invited to submit 2D and 3D work. This is a non-juried exhibit that allows our community of artists to explore their creativity.

For the first time, the Cain Center for the Arts  has added an exhibit for artists from the ages of 10-16 .

This exhibit is  open at the Cornelius Arts Center Gallery, and available to view by the public on 10 am – 4 pm Mondays -Tuesdays and 10 am-1 pm Wednesdays.

An Afternoon of Irish Tunes

Bright Star

Bright Star is a haunting tale of love and redemption set among a rich ensemble of characters in the North Carolina mountains in the 1940’s. Donuts With the Duck and Bunny

9 am, 10 am and 11 am | March 23. Hop on over to for “Donuts with the Duck and Bunny” on d! Enjoy donuts and a craft while you wait for your Bunny and Duck photo. Advance registration with a fee of $10 per family is required. Space is limited to 30 tables per time slot. NC Arbor Day Tree Planting: Pump House Greenway

In celebration of the NC Arbor Day (held earlier than the national Arbor Day to coincide with the area tree planting season), TreesDavidson will host a tree planting at the Pump House Greenway, 865 South St., to plant 40-50 trees with volunteers. The Loch Norman Highland Games and Scottish Festival

Tickets and a new life patron program are on sale now; $30-$3,000. This is a traditional Scottish festival that takes place annually at Historic Rural Hill, Huntersville. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event. Visitors can enjoy traditional Scottish music and dance performances, as well as athletic competitions such as caber tossing, hammer throwing, and tug-of-war.
