UPDATE: CPD issued this press release the day after the incident

On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, Officers with the Cornelius Police Department were conducting a proactive patrol in reference to a possible stolen vehicle and mail theft near Jetton Road and West Catawba Avenue in Cornelius.

During the proactive patrol, Officers observed the known suspect and initiated a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop resulting in a vehicle pursuit. The driver then fled from the vehicle on foot, resulting in a brief foot chase where the suspect was apprehended. After a search of the vehicle, Officers were able to locate narcotics, a firearm, and several checks.

The suspect is identified as Anthony Andre Hampton of Charlotte. Hampton was arrested and charged with one count Felony Flee to Elude, one count Felony Possession Schedule II, three counts of Misdemeanor Possession of Stolen Goods, one count Felony Possession Stolen Motor Vehicle, two counts Misdemeanor Hit and Run Property Damage, Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor Resisting Public Officer, and was cited by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for Reckless Driving. Hampton is also a suspect in similar cases that occurred in Huntersville and Mooresville.
