Aug. 10. [Updated] A stolen vehicle involved in a crash at Jetton and West Catawba delayed traffic yesterday afternoon, with a large police presence in the area. The suspect, Anthony Andre Hampton, 26, apparently attempted to elude police before the crash. Cornelius Police would not comment, but Hampton was charged with possession of Schedule II narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen goods and resisting a public officer as well as flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle. He has several prior arrests, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriffs office.

On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, Officers with the Cornelius Police Department were conducting a proactive patrol in reference to a possible stolen vehicle and mail theft near Jetton Road and West Catawba Avenue in Cornelius.
During the proactive patrol, Officers observed the known suspect and initiated a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop resulting in a vehicle pursuit. Knowing the suspect would potentially flee, other Cornelius Officers were able to determine a location to successfully deploy stop sticks, that resulted in the vehicle’s tires being punctured. The driver continued to flee south on Jetton Road before crashing into another vehicle on West Catawba Avenue. There were no injuries sustained as a result of the crash. The driver then fled from the vehicle on foot, resulting in a brief foot chase where the suspect was apprehended. After a search of the vehicle, Officers were able to locate narcotics, a firearm, and several checks.
The suspect is identified as Anthony Andre Hampton of Charlotte. Hampton was arrested and charged with one count Felony Flee to Elude, one count Felony Possession Schedule II, three counts of Misdemeanor Possession of Stolen Goods, one count Felony Possession Stolen Motor Vehicle, two counts Misdemeanor Hit and Run Property Damage, Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor Resisting Public Officer, and was cited by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for Reckless Driving. Hampton is also a suspect in similar cases that occurred in Huntersville and Mooresville.
He was transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail without incident. Hampton was issued a $50,000 bond.
