Jan. 17. By Dave Vieser. A meeting to explain the Land Use Plan recommendations made by the town’s Growth Management Task Force (GMTF) will be held Thursday Jan. 19 from 5 to 7 pm in Town Hall.

The GTMF was formed after the new Town Board took office in 2021, and comes as a result of the concerns voiced by the residents about rapid growth.

Mayor asks for input

Mayor Woody Washam emphasized the importance of the project. ”I am very grateful to the members of the Growth Management Task Force for the many months of hard work to produce recommendations. The upcoming meeting and public hearings will be important opportunities for the public to provide feedback. I encourage all our citizens to turn out and provide their personal input to the plan.“

Background

The land use plan guides how, when, and where new growth, redevelopment and preservation should occur in a particular area of the town. It is a general policy guide which forms a set of strategies for achieving specific community goals. While it is often used for guidance, the plan in itself is not necessarily regulatory or legally binding.
Cornelius’ current land use plan was put together over a two-year period and adopted in 2014.

Under the current review schedule the changes recommended will come before the Town Board in March.
