Oct. 25. A GoFundMe page has been started to help with medical costs for Alex Medford who was seriously injured last weekend in the fatal crash on I-77. Her mother is Cornelius resident Sam Marshall Cole.

Her daughter’s medical bills are significant, Cole said on the GoFundMe page. “She will be out of work for quite a while and will need extensive therapy once she is allowed to come home.”

Medford has had surgeries to stop internal bleeding and for spinal injuries, according to Cole, a well-known former general manager at Fresh Chef in Cornelius.

Long recovery ahead

“She still has a long road ahead of her but we are on the right path. Thank you everyone for all your well wishes and prayers. Sorry if I haven’t responded yet, it’s been overwhelming. I will get to you all,” she posted.

As of this morning, $3,645 has been raised of the $5,000 goal.

The accident

Huntersville Fire Department Station One and the Cornelius Fire Department responded to a single vehicle crash just before  3 am Saturday, Oct. 22, at the I-77 southbound Exit 25 off ramp. Huntersville Fire Department reported the car hit a tree, killing Tommaso Ghezzi, 23, of Huntersville. Two were transported to hospitals.

Cole said her daughter was wearing a seatbelt and that saved her life.

A memorial service for Tommaso will be held 2 pm Saturday, Oct. 29, at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home in Huntersville.

NC State Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation.
