“Celebrate LIFE at Your Senior Center.” That’s the theme for National Senior Center Month this year and we have a lot of life at the North Mecklenburg Senior Center. We’ve been at our new location at 102 Gilead Road, Huntersville for 11 months and along with our regularly scheduled programs and activities, we’ve added Mahjong, Home Depot DIY workshops, Beginner Tai Chi, Senior Lite Aerobics, chess, a Fibromyalgia Support Group, a Parkinson’s Disease Support Group, a second day of cards and games, a computer lab, a library, and have connected with the Natural Resources and Nature Preserve Department of Mecklenburg County Park and Rec who have been presenting nature programs and trips.
L – Learning – Expanding your Knowledge.
I – Independence – Live on your terms.
F – Friends – Enjoy life, laughter, and feeling connected.
E- Energy – Discover health and vitality.
We want to embrace positive, active aging as we incorporate many of the dimensions of wellness such as the physical, emotional, intellectual and social here at North Meck Senor Center.
“L” is for learning – expanding your knowledge. We are offering lectures and workshops about family dynamics, technology and social media, our Meet the Author monthly book club, “give and take” library, identifying birds in the Lake Norman area, hear Bill Russell from the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce. Learn ( or re-learn) how to knit and crochet and donate your items for the benefit of others at Novant Health, Salisbury Veteran’s Home, and Levine Dickson Hospice House.
“I” – Independence – Live on your own terms. Opportunities include how to fit into your car now that you are older, improve your computer skills in our new computer lab, we have had financial workshops, and a nutritionist to help with your health. Our support groups offer independence to those challenged by Parkinson’s disease and fibromyalgia.
“F”- Friends – Enjoy life, laughter and feeling connected. Come lift your voice up in song with our Chorus named Second Act and bring life and laughter to the area senior groups where our chorus sings. Our Afternoon at The Movies resumes in September, and you can find camaraderie playing cards and games, Wii bowling and at our monthly Out to Lunch Bunch.
“E” – Energy – Discover health and vitality. Engage in our programs that increase physical and mental energy. Our exercise classes include seated strength class, stretch class, line dance, tai chi and new this September, our light aerobics class.
Exercise classes have a fee; call for details. Math Magic will challenge your brain, Matter of Balance Class will help your balance and wellbeing (next class starting Oct.20, sign up now) and trivia will have you laughing and straining to remember those little bits of trivia in your brain. The Lake Norman Senior Fun and Fitness Day held annually at Jetton Park will certainly energize you as you walk the trail, engage with health vendors, participate in chair and line dance classes, and eat a healthy lunch.
There are more activities going on at your Senior Center where there is no joining fee. Many of our programs cross over the above categories and you can be completely filled with LIFE as a participant.
For an overall view of the health offerings for older adults in the Lake Norman community, come to our Annual Wellness Fair 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 24. Novant Health is our sponsor and will be providing free health screenings, Rite Aid will hold a flu shot clinic, Dr. Kelly Knolhoff of South Lake Audiology will provide hearing screenings. There will be door prizes and free healthy food offerings. The health vendors will include home health agencies, chiropractors, hospice and palliative care, transitional moving specialists, assisted living facilities, police and sheriff’s departments and legal, financial and nutritional services
